Staff Development

The environmental field is a rapidly changing field with new governmental regulations and new technology emerging on a daily basis. Wightman Environmental, Inc. believes it is extremely important to keep their staff as up to date as possible with respect to new developments in the environmental field. Each employee of Wightman Environmental, Inc. has completed a 40-hour training course in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER). This training is updated every year with and 8-hour HAZWOPER Refresher Course.

In an effort to stay abreast of all of the environmental regulations and new technologies, Wightman Environmental, Inc. assists our staff by requiring the employees to spend time each week reviewing the appropriate scientific journals (Ground Water, Ground Water Monitoring Review, Water Well Journal, Ground Water Monitor, Michigan Underground Storage Tank, and Michigan Waste Report). We have a complete library of soils, geologic, and Hydrogeologic references for the Great Lakes Region. The staff utilizes computer programs for simulations, solving complex ground water flow regimes and design. Copies of all applicable federal and state regulations and ASTM Standards are maintained in the library, and the company continually receives updates for all federal and state regulations and ASTM Standards.

Each employee of Wightman Environmental, Inc. is required to attend a minimum of one seminar per year related to environmental law, cleanup technology, or a related field. Recent seminars our staff has attended include topics regarding environmental site assessments, environmental liability, remediation of leaking underground storage tanks, wetland determination and delineation processes, and design of solid waste disposal facilities.

Michigan Construction Site Certified Stormwater Operator
This certification provides the necessary training to comply with Michigan construction site stormwater regulations.

Michigan Certified Bituminous Paving Operations Technician
Advanced concepts of paving are learned for this certification aiding in checking paving operations against standard practices and project standards.

Michigan Certified Bituminous Laboratory Technician, Level I
This certification qualifies the inspector to take asphalt samples and analyze the gradation of the asphalt mixture for compliance to construction specifications.

Michigan Certified Troxler Technician
Inspectors performing density tests with a Troxler gauge must be certified due to the radioactive nature of the device.

Michigan Certified Density Technician
Inspectors use a Troxler Nuclear Density gauge primarily to measure compaction in soils and aggregates. These tests are performed in a variety of situations including pipe trenches, sand sub-base, aggregate base and road shoulders. Density testing may also be performed on embankments and cut areas.

Michigan Certified Aggregate Technician
Inspectors sample aggregate mixes in the field and test them in the lab to determine their physical and gradational properties and whether or not the mixes provided meet the project requirements.

MCPA Concrete Field Testing Technician, Level I & II
Inspectors sample and test concrete in the field according to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. Tests cover a number of factors including consistency (slump), air content and temperature. Concrete cylinders are also cured for seven days and 28 days to determine compressive strength.

This enables inspectors to analyze the individual concrete mixes and concrete proportioning data to check for conformity to mix designs and concrete production standards.

ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician, Grade I
Inspectors sample and test concrete in the field according to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. Tests cover a number of factors including consistency (slump), air content and temperature. Concrete cylinders are also cured for seven days and 28 days to determine compressive strength.
